We exist in many worlds. These worlds, both seen and unseen, are layers of energy that spread around us in concentric spheres. The layer most obvious to our senses is our physical body. Formed at conception and disintegrating with death, the body provides a home during the lifetime of our physical journey. For each of us, our physical form is the center of our existence.
Energy layers ripple outward from this physical center as we interact with the environment. We breathe in, breathe out, eat, eliminate. The energy in our bodies and in nature is in constant contact, being shared and transformed. We are made up of each other.
The energy layers of physical reality continue to spread outward as our being interacts with our neighbors—plants, animals, and other humans. Our personal energy is also part of the energy that makes up families and communities, as well as political and geographic concentrations. We are also energy members of planet Earth, the solar system, the Milky Way, and eventually the Infinite Universe.
These worlds are not separate. They are contained in each other and present simultaneously at every moment. We may not be constantly aware of all these layers, but they are always present and our energy is included in theirs.
We also extend in energy layers in the other direction—inward. Our everyday connection with reality occurs through the five senses. Inside our bodies, we know that we are made up of body systems: Our lungs breathe. Our blood is pumped and filtered. Nerves fire. Chemicals are produced and released. Multiple body systems are all working together every second of every day around the clock to maintain our physical survival.
When we look closer, we can see that every one of those body systems is made up of cells. The cells are made of cell components, which are made of molecules, which are made of atoms, and atomic particles and on and on. Just like our outer universe, our inner universe stretches farther than our ability to see, measure, or comprehend.
There are even more layers in motion beyond our usual awareness. This physical body, for example—this great gift which is a center of the Universe, where does it come from? Every one of us is the product of the joining of an egg and a sperm. Each egg and sperm is a single-celled carrier of genetic material. Genetic chemical coding is nature’s computer program—it carries all of the information needed to create an incredibly complex human being.
Where does this coded program come from? It comes from our ancestors—our parents, our grandparents, and their great-great-grandparents. We are generally aware of three to four generations back in time, but there have already been at least a hundred thousand generations of recognizable humans. Ultimately, this family tree unites you and me and everyone through the same ancestors from millions of years ago. We really are all related. It’s not just some cute cliché. It is a fact. The human family tree spreads out from its roots like a giant net, and every one of us is in it.
We can move away from ego function and toward a deeper spiritual connection by not only recognizing all this connectedness, but by also living it––by integrating it into our awareness and our actions.
There are some great videos that can help bring this into focus. The original The Power Of Ten was created in 1977 and has been reworked several times. I’ve included a couple of them. Click and enjoy the trip!
