The following excerpt is from a Jodi Picoult book which explores the themes of harm and forgiveness.* In this part of the story, the narrator is remembering her grandmother, who lost a breast to cancer, and a time when she accidentally saw her grandmother in the shower:
I did not have the words, at a that age, to explain what I wasn’t seeing, but I understood that it was not what it should have been. I pointed to the wound. “It’s missing,” I said. My grandmother smiled, and that was all it took for me to stop seeing the scar, and to recognize her again. “Yes,” she said. “But see how much of me is left?”
