I participated in a panel discussion of writers that was centered around Spirituality & The Arts. One of the questions we were asked was, “How do you define or what is your experience of spirituality?” Wow. That’s a big topic! Stop for a minute and ask yourself that question.

As humans, we tend to live our lives telling a story about ourselves. The story is focused on “me” and interactions with “my group(s).” That perspective puts the Universe, the Everything There Is, either on the periphery or ignores it completely. Actually, it is the Universe that is telling the story, and we happen to be in it.

Think about astronauts, who are able to see earth from a distance, in its entirety and in the context of vast expanses of space where we live. They often describe a moment of awakening when they understood the interconnectedness of Everything.

When we are not only thinking about but also feeling and behaving within that larger context, we are experiencing spirituality.
